Many thanks to Nick Hughes for providing the following reports:-
25th January 2009 - Upper
Brue Championship
71
competitors entered the latest G.M.A.A fishing competition, the
“Upper Brue Open” match on Sunday 25th
January. With overnight rain on Saturday, a rising river was
inevitable.
Martin
Barrett, a Wiltshire based police officer, won the event with four
good size Chub and a large Perch, with a total weight of 9 lbs 12
ozs. Second place went to Ashley Thomkins from Yeovil with 8 lbs 10
ozs. This weight included a 7 lb 12 oz Bream, he was pegged at
Cowbridge where the river was steadier with more depth, a definite
asset on the day. Third place went to local angler Colin Lambert with
a Chub of 3 lbs 1 oz caught on ledgered cheese a quarter of an hour
into the five hour match.
Some
anglers had to move back on the bank due to the water rising, and
some were forgiven for going home early due to these conditions.
11th January 2009
Sheets
of floating ice greeted the 25 competitors on the latest G.M.A.A
fishing match. With it being so cold, weights were expected to be
well down on what could normally be experienced on the River Brue at
Meare Road.
Shepton
Mallet based Martin Western proved top-rod on the day with 4 chub and
a bream for a total weight of 11 lbs 2 ozs caught on straight lead
and quiver-tip tactics. Second was Tony Cinicola with 6 lbs 5 ozs
consisting of a bream and chub caught in the last hour of the match,
also on straight lead and tip. Third weight went to Roger Coombs of
Bridgwater, pegged in Cold Harbour, he weighed 5 lbs 15 ozs of small
fish.
4th January 2009 - Committee Match
Sunday
saw a very frosty scene greet the entrants for G.M.A.A’s latest
match for the M. Rawlet Committee trophy. Fished between Clyse Hole
and Pons Perils bridge on the River Brue eight anglers turned out
dressed in arctic attire.
Bailiff,
Tony Cinicola, a man more used to Mediterranean weather conditions,
won the event with a weight of 19 lbs 5 ozs consisting of well over
100 fish, caught mainly on “the whip” and maggot combination.
Second weight of 8 lbs 2 0zs went to the ever consistent Jamie
Stevens with another net of small fish. Third place was ex-pro and
bailiff Derek jack with 6 lbs 7 ozs of small fish.
The
match was a very successful event with most fish coming unexpectedly
from the shallower stretches, again proving the plentiful stock of
fish in the river.
